VietTESOL International Convention 2022
Nha Trang University, September 16-18
Before February 2020, many teachers had never heard of Zoom nor were they using it in their school or university even though it had existed for almost a decade. However, since that time Zoom has embedded itself as the video communication platform for many educational institutions for the delivery of their classes and lectures. Teachers were not given a choice, they were given a Zoom Code and, most recently, a Zoom Password. As students left the physical classroom due to the impact of Covid 19, Zoom entered it. As a result, many teacher observations have turned into a viewing of a Zoom recorded session on a later date and time. The real-time teacher observation has become an asynchronous viewing of a Zoom recorded session for many teachers. This research was twofold: In the first part, the researcher set out to ascertain the opinions from a focus group of teachers who were scheduled to have their Annual Teacher Observations in May 2021 using this new method of teacher observation in the Covid era. In the second part, the researcher interviewed the two observers who observed the teachers from the focus group for their Annual Teacher Observations about their experiences using this new method of teacher observation. The overall aim of this research was to feedback suggestions from both the teachers observed and the observers to the observation process as a Professional Development Tool of an educational institution in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
